About Dubai Airport
Dubai International Airport (DXB) is a major airport which serves Dubai. Being situated in the district of Al Garhoud, it represents one of the main Middle East hubs and its main operator is the Department of Civil Aviation. Emirates, Emirates SkyCargo and Flydubai use this airport as their main base. About 50.98 passengers used DXB in 2011, making it the 13th world busiest airport.
The first airport airfield was ready in 1960 being gradually expanded in the 1970s. In the 1980s new airlines started using it, such as Air India, Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific or Malaysia Airlines. Further development continued with the construction of Terminal 2 and the opening of Concourse 1. Concourse 1, also named Sheikh Rashid Terminal, accommodates numerous facilities as medical center, hotel, prayer room or business center.
Terminal 3 opened in 2008 and 29 gates were further added to the airport building. A new Cargo Mega Terminal is planned to be built in the coming years alongside with other new facilities. At presents the airport has a traffic control tower and 4 terminals, three of them being passenger terminals. An Executive Flights Terminal is located opposite Terminal 2.
Terminal 1 handles 30 million passengers and it is served by 48 gates. Concourse 1 has 60 gates, numerous restaurants and cafes and an airport hotel. Terminal 2 has also undergone expansion to handle the increasing number of passengers. Terminal 3 is at present the largest world terminal and part of it is underground.
